Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of colors and be able to identify and name several colors in their environment.

Materials and Prep

No additional materials are needed for this lesson. Just make sure the learning space is well-lit and has various colorful objects around for the student to explore.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a fun scavenger hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of specific colors. For example, "Can you find something red?" This will help them identify colors in the world around them.

  • Color Sorting: Gather different colored items (like toys, clothes, or books) and help the student sort them into groups based on color. For instance, "Let's put all the blue things together!" This activity reinforces color recognition and categorization skills.

  • Color Mixing: If you have access to colored water (using food coloring and water), show how mixing colors creates new ones. For example, "What happens when we mix blue and yellow? Let's see if we can make green!" This introduces the concept of primary and secondary colors.

  • Color Dance Party: Play music and have a dance party where the student can only dance when a specific color is called out. For example, "Dance if you see something orange!" This combines physical activity with color recognition.

Talking Points

  • "Look around! What colors do you see? Can you name them?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! What color is your favorite?"
  • "When we mix colors, they can change! What do you think will happen if we mix red and blue?"
  • "Let's find something that is the same color as your shirt! What color is your shirt?"
