Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and write the letter 'A', understand its sound, and identify words that start with 'A'.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Books or pictures with words that start with 'A' (like apple, ant, etc.)
  • Space to move around for activities

Activities

  • Letter A Art:

    Have the student draw or color a large letter 'A' on a piece of paper. Encourage them to decorate it with things that start with 'A', like apples or ants.

  • Amazing A Sound:

    Practice the sound of the letter 'A' together. Say "A" and have the student repeat it. Then, think of words that start with 'A' and say them out loud together.

  • A Hunt:

    Go on a treasure hunt around the house or yard to find items that start with the letter 'A'. For example, look for an apple, an ant, or anything else that begins with 'A'.

  • Story Time:

    Read a short story or look at a picture book that has lots of words starting with 'A'. Point to the words as you read them to help the student connect the sound with the letters.

Talking Points

  • "This is the letter 'A'. Can you say 'A' with me?"
  • "Great job! 'A' makes the sound like in 'apple'. Can you think of other words that start with 'A'?"
  • "Look around! Can we find something that starts with 'A'? What about this apple?"
  • "When we read, we see letters. Let's find 'A' in this book together!"
