Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand basic color mixing, and create their own colorful artwork!
Materials and Prep
- White paper
- Crayons or washable markers
- Watercolor paints (if available)
- Paintbrush (if using watercolor paints)
- A cup of water (if using watercolor paints)
- Paper towels or a cloth for cleaning up
Before the lesson, make sure to cover the workspace with newspaper or an old tablecloth to protect it from any mess!
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard! Look for objects of different colors and name them together. For example, find something red, blue, yellow, and green.
-
Mixing Colors: Using the watercolor paints, show the student how to mix two colors to create a new one. For example, mix blue and yellow to make green!
-
Art Time: Let the student create their own masterpiece using crayons or markers. Encourage them to use as many colors as they can and talk about what colors they are using.
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is the same color?"
- "When we mix blue and yellow, what color do we get? Let's try it together!"
- "Look at all the colors you are using! What is your favorite color?"
- "Can you tell me a story about your picture? What is happening in your colorful world?"
