Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of shapes and be able to identify and name common shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.

Materials and Prep

No additional materials are needed for this lesson. Just be ready to have fun and explore shapes with your student!

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the shapes you discuss. For example, "Can you find something that is a circle?"

  • Shape Drawing: Draw shapes in the air with your finger, then on paper. Encourage the student to copy you and create their own shapes. You can say, "Let's draw a big triangle together!"

  • Shape Sorting: Use everyday objects to sort them into groups based on their shapes. For instance, "Can you put all the circles in one pile and all the squares in another?"

  • Shape Songs: Sing a fun song about shapes. You can make up a little tune or use a familiar melody and add lyrics about different shapes. For example, "Round and round goes the circle, square and square, it has four sides!"

Talking Points

  • "Look! This is a circle! It goes round and round!"
  • "A square has four sides that are all the same. Can you count them with me?"
  • "Triangles have three sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
  • "What shape is this? Yes! It's a rectangle! It has two long sides and two short sides!"
