Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, as well as recognize colors in their environment. They will also engage in fun activities that help them learn about colors through play and exploration.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful objects (toys, clothing, etc.) around the house
  • Crayons or markers (if available)
  • Paper (if available)
  • Space to play and explore

Before the lesson, ensure that the area is safe for exploration and that colorful objects are easily accessible. Familiarize yourself with the primary colors: red, blue, yellow, and secondary colors: green, orange, purple.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house! Ask the student to find objects of specific colors. For example, say, "Can you find something red?" Celebrate each discovery!

  • Color Sorting:

Gather various colorful objects and sort them by color. You can say, "Let's put all the red things in one pile and all the blue things in another!"

  • Color Drawing:

If you have crayons or markers, encourage the student to draw something using their favorite color. Ask them to tell you what they are drawing and what colors they are using.

  • Color Dance:

Play music and have a dance party! When the music stops, call out a color and have the student freeze and show you something of that color.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "Look at all the different colors! Which one is your favorite?"
  • "Can you find something in this room that is the same color as your shirt?"
  • "Let’s mix colors! What happens when we mix red and yellow? Can you guess?"
