Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand how to mix colors, and create their own colorful artwork!
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any type will do!)
- Crayons or colored pencils (any colors you have)
- Water (for mixing colors if using washable markers)
- Small containers (for mixing colors, optional)
Before the lesson, make sure you have a clean workspace. It’s best to have a table or a flat surface where the student can freely create without worrying about making a mess!
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors. For example, "Can you find something red?"
-
Color Mixing: If you have water and washable markers, let the student draw with the markers on paper, then use a wet brush to mix the colors. Watch how new colors appear!
-
Art Time: Give the student paper and crayons or colored pencils. Encourage them to draw anything they like while using as many colors as possible.
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Look at how mixing blue and yellow makes green! Isn’t that magic?"
- "Can you find something in the room that is the same color as your drawing?"
- "Wow, you used so many colors! What’s your favorite color to use?"
