Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concepts of computer networking, specifically how domain names are translated into IP addresses, and the importance of DNS (Domain Name System) in our daily internet usage.

Activities

• Exploring DNS:

  Begin by explaining the concept of DNS. Have the student look up their favorite website using a browser and discuss how they think their device finds that website.

• Hands-On DNS Lookup:

  Guide the student to perform a simple DNS lookup using an online tool. They can enter a domain name and see the corresponding IP address. Discuss what they observe.

• Creative Drawing:

  Ask the student to draw a diagram showing how a domain name is connected to an IP address, using arrows to represent the flow of information. This visual representation will help solidify their understanding.

• Real-World Application:

  Encourage the student to think of scenarios where DNS is important. For example, what would happen if we didn’t have DNS? Have them write a short paragraph about their thoughts.
