By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors in their environment and understand how colors can mix to create new ones.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper (red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
  • Crayons or markers
  • A clear cup of water
  • Two small containers for mixing colors
  • Paper towels for cleanup

Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a clean space for activities. Familiarize yourself with basic color mixing concepts to explain to the student.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of specific colors and bring them back to show you.

  • Color Mixing Experiment: Use the clear cup of water and the two small containers to mix different colors of crayons or markers in the water. Show how blue and yellow make green!

  • Color Art: Let the student use colorful paper and crayons to create a colorful masterpiece. Encourage them to use as many colors as they can!

Talking Points

  • "Can you find something red in the room? What about something blue?"
  • "Look! When we mix blue and yellow, we get green! Isn’t that cool?"
  • "What colors do you see in your picture? Can you tell me their names?"
  • "What happens if we mix red and blue? Let’s find out together!"
