Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand basic color mixing, and create a colorful artwork using their knowledge of colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful construction paper or any paper available
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Water and a small container (for mixing, if applicable)
  • Optional: A white plate or tray for mixing colors

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and how they mix to create secondary colors (green, orange, purple). Prepare a space where the student can freely explore colors without worrying about mess.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and name them as they go. For example, “Can you find something red?”

  • Color Mixing Experiment:

Using water and food coloring (if available), demonstrate how to mix colors. Show how red and blue make purple, yellow and blue make green, etc. Let the student help mix and observe the changes.

  • Colorful Art Creation:

Encourage the student to create a colorful artwork using crayons or markers. They can draw anything they like, and you can discuss the colors they are using as they create their masterpiece.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you find something else that is the same color?"
  • "When we mix red and yellow, what color do we get? Let's find out!"
  • "Look at your drawing! What colors did you use? Which one is your favorite?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! Can you name a color you see outside?"
