Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of computer file systems and how files are organized, using the fun concept of a treasure hunt for hidden files!

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • A small box or container to represent a "computer"
  • Printed pictures of files (like a picture of a cat, a toy, etc.)
  • A simple drawing of a file system (like a tree with branches)

Before the lesson, prepare the box with the pictures of files inside. Make sure to explain what a file is and how we can find them in a computer!

Activities

  • File Treasure Hunt: Hide the printed pictures of files around the room. Tell the student they are going on a treasure hunt to find all the files. Each time they find one, they can color a picture of it!

  • Draw Your Own File System: Using the crayons or markers, have the student draw their own version of a file system. They can create a tree with branches representing different folders and files!

  • Story Time: Create a simple story about a computer that needs help finding its lost files. Use the drawings to illustrate the story and make it interactive by asking the student to help find the files!

Talking Points

  • "What do you think a file is? It's like a treasure that holds special things!"
  • "Just like in our treasure hunt, computers have places to keep their treasures too!"
  • "When we find a file, we can open it and see what's inside, like opening a treasure box!"
  • "Can you help me draw a big tree? Each branch can be a folder, and the leaves can be our files!"
