Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the concept of counting and grouping items, enhancing their mathematical skills and encouraging logical thinking through fun activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful counting blocks or toys (any small items that can be grouped)
  • Paper and crayons for drawing
  • A timer or stopwatch (optional, for timed activities)

Before the lesson, ensure that the counting blocks or toys are easily accessible. Prepare a comfortable space for activities and drawing.

Activities

  • Counting with Blocks:

Use the colorful blocks to count out loud together. Start with 1 to 10, then mix it up by asking the student to count a certain number of blocks. Encourage them to group the blocks into sets of 2 or 3.

  • Group and Draw:

After counting, have the student draw their favorite group of items. For example, if they counted 5 red blocks, they can draw 5 red squares and color them in. This reinforces their counting skills through art.

  • Timed Counting Challenge:

Set a timer for 1 minute and see how many blocks the student can count and group. Celebrate their achievements and encourage them to beat their own record next time!

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many blocks we have? Let's count together!"
  • "Look! We have 3 blocks. Can you make a group of 3 with your toys?"
  • "What happens if we add 2 more blocks? How many do we have now?"
  • "Drawing helps us remember! Can you draw your favorite number of blocks?"
