Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand the concept of patterns using colors and shapes. They will also develop their fine motor skills through hands-on activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Colored paper (red, blue, yellow, green)
  • Shapes cutouts (circles, squares, triangles)
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors (for adult use)
  • Markers or crayons

Make sure to prepare the colored paper and shape cutouts ahead of time. It’s also helpful to have a space where the student can work comfortably without distractions.

Activities

  • Color Sorting:

Have the student sort the colored paper into groups by color. Encourage them to name the colors as they sort. This helps them recognize colors and develop categorization skills.

  • Shape Matching:

Provide the shape cutouts and ask the student to match them with the same shapes. This activity reinforces shape recognition and helps with memory skills.

  • Pattern Creation:

Using the colored paper and shape cutouts, guide the student to create their own patterns. For example, they can alternate colors or shapes. This encourages creativity and understanding of patterns.

  • Art Time:

Let the student use the markers or crayons to draw their favorite pattern. They can use their imagination to create something unique while practicing their fine motor skills.

Talking Points

  • "Can you tell me what colors you see?"
  • "What shape is this? Can you find another one like it?"
  • "Let’s make a pattern! What comes next: red, blue, red, blue?"
  • "Wow! Your drawing is so colorful! What pattern did you make?"
