Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different shapes, and understand how they can be found in everyday objects around them.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Scissors (for adult use only)
  • Glue (optional)
  • Everyday objects (like toys, books, and kitchen items)

Before the lesson, gather various objects from around the house that represent different shapes. Make sure to have a safe space for the activities.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Take a fun walk around the house or yard to find objects that match different shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. Ask the student to point and name each shape they find.

  • Shape Drawing:

Using paper and crayons, have the student draw their favorite shapes. Encourage them to use different colors and sizes, and then talk about the shapes they created.

  • Shape Collage:

Help the student cut out shapes from colored paper (with adult supervision) and glue them onto a larger piece of paper to create a fun shape collage.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this circle! Can you find something else that is a circle?"
  • "What color is your triangle? Can you draw a triangle for me?"
  • "Let’s count how many squares we can find together!"
  • "Great job! Every shape has its own special name. Can you remember the names of the shapes we found?"
