Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of how the internet works, specifically focusing on domain names and how they are resolved to IP addresses. The student will also learn about the importance of DNS (Domain Name System) and how to use basic commands to explore this system.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer with internet access
  • A notepad and pencil for taking notes
  • Basic understanding of what a website is and how to use a web browser

Activities

  • DNS Detective: The student will act as a "DNS detective." They will use the command line to perform DNS lookups for different websites. For example, they can type "nslookup google.com" and see what information they get. This will help them understand how DNS translates domain names into IP addresses.

  • Website Exploration: The student will choose their favorite website and research its domain name. They will look up the website's IP address using the command line and write down their findings. This activity will make them realize how every website has a unique address on the internet.

  • Creative Presentation: The student will create a simple presentation using drawings or slides about what they learned regarding DNS and IP addresses. They can illustrate how a browser uses DNS to find a website and present it to a family member or friend.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think happens when you type a website name into your browser?"
  • "DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It helps your computer find the right address for a website."
  • "Every website has a special number called an IP address. Can you guess what happens if you type that number into your browser?"
  • "Using commands like 'nslookup' helps us see the magic behind how we connect to websites!"
  • "Why do you think it's important for computers to have a way to look up website addresses?"
