Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and identify basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. They will also be able to recognize these shapes in their environment and create their own shape art.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials needed, just your imagination!
  • Be ready to explore shapes in the environment around you.
  • Think of some fun shape-related songs or rhymes to share.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Look for items that match the shapes you are learning about. For example, find a round ball for a circle or a square box.

  • Shape Art:

Use your hands to create art with shapes. You can draw, use your fingers to make shapes in the air, or even use your body to make different shapes!

  • Shape Songs:

Sing songs about shapes together! You can make up a song or use a familiar tune to sing about circles, squares, and triangles.

  • Shape Storytime:

Read a story that includes shapes. Talk about the shapes you see in the pictures and how they relate to the story.

Talking Points

  • "What shape is this? Can you find something like it in our house?"
  • "Look at this circle! Can you make a circle with your arms?"
  • "A square has four equal sides. Can you count the sides with me?"
  • "Triangles have three sides. Can you find something that looks like a triangle?"
  • "Let's sing a song about shapes! Can you help me make up some words?"
