Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create their own colorful artwork.
Materials and Prep
- Various colors of paint (if available) or colored crayons/markers
- White paper or a drawing surface
- Water (for cleaning brushes or fingers, if using paint)
- A container for mixing colors (like a plate or a bowl)
- Paper towels or a cloth for cleaning up
Before the lesson, make sure to set up a space where the student can freely create without worrying about making a mess. Lay down some old newspapers or a plastic sheet if necessary.
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or outside. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and name them. For example, "Can you find something red?"
-
Color Mixing Fun: If using paint, demonstrate how to mix two colors together to make a new color. For example, mix blue and yellow to make green. Let the student try mixing colors themselves.
-
Create a Colorful Masterpiece: Give the student a piece of paper and let them use the colors they have to create their own artwork. Encourage them to use different colors and techniques (like dots, swirls, etc.).
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Look at how blue and yellow make green! Isn’t that cool?"
- "What do you want to make with your colors? Tell me about your picture!"
- "Colors can make us feel happy! What color makes you feel happy?"
