Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different shapes, as well as understand how shapes are found in everyday objects around them.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons
- Household items (like a book, a plate, a toy, etc.)
- Space to move around and explore
Before the lesson, make sure to gather a variety of household items that have different shapes. This will help the student see how shapes are everywhere!
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find items that match specific shapes, like a circle (a plate) or a square (a box). This encourages exploration and recognition.
-
Shape Drawing: Give the student paper and crayons, and ask them to draw their favorite shapes. Encourage them to color and decorate their shapes with fun patterns!
-
Shape Storytime: Create a short story using shapes. For example, "Once upon a time, there was a big round sun and a square house." This helps them connect shapes to storytelling.
Talking Points
- "Look at this plate! What shape is it? Yes, it's a circle!"
- "Can you find something in the room that is a square? Great job!"
- "Shapes can be found everywhere! What shape do you see outside?"
- "Let's make a shape story together! What shapes do you want to use?"
