Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basic concept of a file and how computers use files to store information. They will learn through fun activities that help them relate to the idea of files in a simple way.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Small boxes or containers (to represent folders)
  • Stickers or small toys (to represent files)

Before the lesson, gather the materials and create a small area where the student can easily access them. Make sure to explain that we are going to play with "files" and "folders" just like a computer does!

Activities

  • File Creation: The student will draw pictures on paper to represent their favorite things (like toys, animals, etc.). These drawings will act as "files" that they can put away in their "folders."

  • Folder Fun: Using the small boxes or containers, the student will organize their drawings into different "folders." They can label the folders with stickers or crayons, like "Animals" or "Toys."

  • File Adventure: Create a treasure hunt where the student has to find hidden "files" (toys or stickers) around the room and place them in the correct "folders." This will help them learn about organizing files!

Talking Points

  • "Do you see this paper? This is like a file on a computer. It has special information!"
  • "When we put our pictures in boxes, we are making folders. Folders help us keep things organized!"
  • "Just like you have favorite toys, computers have favorite files they like to keep safe!"
  • "When we go on a treasure hunt, we are finding files to put in our folders. Isn’t that fun?"
