Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about how computers find information on the internet, using fun activities to explore the concepts of names and addresses in a simple way.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Small toys or objects to represent computers and websites (like blocks or stuffed animals)
  • A comfortable space to sit and play

Before the lesson, think about how to explain what a computer does in simple terms. Prepare to use toys to represent different parts of the internet!

Activities

  • Computer Name Game: Use small toys to represent computers and websites. Have the student pretend to be a computer looking for a toy (website) by calling out its name. This helps them understand how computers look for information using names.

  • Drawing Addresses: Ask the student to draw a picture of their favorite toy and give it a name. Explain that just like their drawing has a name, websites have names too! This will help them understand the concept of a website's address.

  • Treasure Hunt: Hide a toy in the room and give clues using names. For example, say “Look for the toy that starts with 'B'!” This will show them how to find things using names, similar to how computers find websites.

Talking Points

  • "Just like you have a name, websites have names too! Can you tell me your name?"
  • "When you want to find your toy, you call its name. Computers do the same thing when they look for websites!"
  • "If I say 'find the blue block,' you know where to look! Computers find things by names, just like that!"
  • "Every toy has a special place, just like every website has a special address on the internet!"
