Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of how to explore the internet and learn what different websites are about, using fun and playful activities that introduce them to concepts of names and connections.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Small toys or figurines (to represent websites)
  • Access to a computer or tablet (for demonstration purposes)
  • Simple drawings of a computer and a globe (to illustrate the internet)

Before the lesson, make sure you have a comfortable space for activities and that the computer or tablet is set up for a demonstration of how websites work.

Activities

  • Drawing Our Websites: Have the student draw their favorite website or a simple picture that represents it. Talk about what they like about that website and what they think it does.

  • Toy Connection Game: Use small toys or figurines to represent different websites. Create a fun game where the toys "connect" to each other, showing how websites can link to one another.

  • Story Time with the Internet: Create a simple story about a character going on an adventure through the internet. Use the drawings of the computer and globe to illustrate the journey.

  • Fun with Names: Explain what a name is by playing a game where you say a name and the student has to say what that name means to them. Relate it back to how websites have names too!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that every website has a special name, just like you have a name?"
  • "When we want to visit a website, we have to type its name, like saying 'hello' to a friend!"
  • "Websites can talk to each other, just like you talk to your friends! They share fun things!"
  • "Let’s pretend our toys are websites. How do they connect? Can they share toys with each other?"
