Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand basic shapes, including circles, squares, and triangles, through fun activities and play.
Materials and Prep
For this lesson, you will need:
- Colored paper (any colors you have)
- Scissors (for adult use only)
- Glue or tape
- Markers or crayons
- A safe space to play and create
Before starting, make sure to cut out some basic shapes (circles, squares, triangles) from the colored paper. This will help the student recognize them easily during the activities.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find items that match the shapes you've cut out. For example, "Can you find something that looks like a circle?"
-
Shape Collage:
Using the cut-out shapes, let the student create a fun collage by gluing them onto a larger piece of paper. Encourage them to tell you what shapes they are using as they create. For example, "What shape is this? Yes, it's a triangle!"
-
Shape Dance:
Play some music and have a shape dance party! When the music stops, call out a shape and have the student freeze in a pose that represents that shape. For instance, "Freeze like a square!"
Talking Points
- "Look at this shape! This is a circle. Can you find something round like a circle?"
- "Great job finding that square! A square has four sides that are all the same. Can you count them?"
- "This is a triangle! It has three sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
- "Shapes are all around us! Can you think of a shape we see outside?"
