Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different shapes, understand their properties, and identify shapes in their surroundings.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (if appropriate for the child’s skill level)
- Space for drawing and playing
Before the lesson, make sure the area is safe for cutting and drawing. Familiarize yourself with basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and oval.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the child to find objects that match the shapes you discuss. For example, "Can you find something that is round like a circle?"
-
Shape Drawing: Provide the child with paper and crayons to draw different shapes. Encourage them to color each shape and talk about what they are drawing.
-
Shape Collage: Cut out shapes from paper (with supervision) and create a fun collage. Ask the child to name each shape as they glue it onto another piece of paper.
-
Shape Songs: Sing songs about shapes. You can make up silly songs to the tune of familiar melodies, like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," but about shapes instead!
Talking Points
- "Look at this circle! It's round like a ball. Can you find something else that is round?"
- "This is a square! It has four equal sides. Can you count the sides with me?"
- "Triangles have three sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
- "Ovals are like circles that are stretched out. Can you draw an oval with your finger in the air?"
