Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of exploring the internet safely, using fun and engaging activities to learn about how we can find information online.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored crayons or markers
- A computer or tablet (for demonstration purposes)
- Access to a safe search engine or website
- Simple printouts of pictures related to the internet (like computers, websites, etc.)
Before the lesson, make sure to set up a safe environment for online exploration and prepare the printouts of pictures that will be used during the activities.
Activities
-
Coloring Internet Pictures
The student will color pictures of computers, websites, and other internet-related items. This will help them recognize what they might see when they go online.
-
Find the Website Game
Using a safe search engine, the student can help find a specific image or information. For example, they can search for "cute cats" and see what comes up, discussing what they find.
-
Story Time with Internet Safety
Read a short story about a character who learns how to use the internet safely. Discuss the story and what the character did to stay safe.
-
Make a Safe Internet Rules Chart
Together, create a chart of rules for using the internet safely. The student can draw pictures for each rule to make it fun and memorable.

- "When we look for things online, we have to be careful and make sure we’re safe. Can you think of a way to stay safe?"
- "Look at this picture! This is what a website looks like. Do you want to help me find something on a website?"
- "If we see something that makes us feel funny or scared online, we should tell a grown-up. Who would you tell?"
