Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, as well as identify objects around them that match those colors. They will also learn to express their thoughts about colors in a fun and engaging way.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful paper or fabric scraps
- Crayons or markers
- A mirror (optional)
- Everyday objects in various colors (toys, fruits, etc.)
Before the lesson, gather the colorful materials and ensure the student has a comfortable space to explore colors. Familiarize yourself with the names of basic colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, and pink.
Activities
- Color Hunt:
Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match a specific color you call out. For example, "Can you find something red?" Celebrate their discoveries!
- Color Mixing:
Using crayons or markers, show the student how to mix colors. For instance, ask them to color with blue and then overlay yellow to see what new color they create. Encourage them to name the new color!
- Color Collage:
Provide the colorful paper or fabric scraps and let the student create a collage. They can choose their favorite colors and glue them onto a larger piece of paper. Ask them to describe their collage once it's done!
- Mirror Reflection:
If you have a mirror, hold it up and ask the student to point to the colors they see in their clothes or hair. This helps them understand how colors are all around them!
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Look at all the colors in this room! What is your favorite color?"
- "When we mix blue and yellow, what do we get? Can you guess?"
- "Great job finding all those colors! You are a color detective!"
- "Colors are everywhere! Can you find something outside that is the same color as your shirt?"
