Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand how to mix primary colors to create new colors, and express creativity through color exploration.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper (any color)
  • Water (for mixing colors)
  • Containers (like cups or bowls) for mixing
  • Paintbrush or fingers for painting
  • Old newspapers or a plastic sheet to protect the area

Before starting, prepare the area by laying down newspapers or a plastic sheet to keep everything clean. Make sure to have water ready for mixing colors.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and name them out loud.
  • Color Mixing Experiment: Use water and food coloring (if available) to mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and see what new colors they can create together.
  • Creative Painting: Let the student paint freely using their favorite colors. Encourage them to use different colors and see how they can mix them on the paper.
  • Color Storytime: Read a short story that includes colors, and ask the student to point out the colors as you read. You can also ask them to describe their favorite color in the story.

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "Look! When we mix red and blue, what color do we get? Let's find out!"
  • "How many colors can you see in this painting? Can you name them?"
  • "What is your favorite color? Why do you like it?"
