Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the concept of shapes, identify different shapes in their environment, and create fun art using various shapes.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors (for adult use only)
  • Glue (optional)
  • A safe space to explore shapes in the home or outside

Before the lesson, make sure to have a variety of shapes drawn on paper, and prepare a fun area where the student can explore and create!

Activities

  • Shape Hunt:

Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard! Look for objects that are circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. When you find one, shout its name!

  • Shape Art:

Using the paper and crayons, have the student draw different shapes. Encourage them to color them in and even cut them out (with adult help) to create a fun collage!

  • Shape Sorting:

Gather various items from around the house and sort them by shape. Ask the student to help you put all the circles together, all the squares together, etc.

  • Shape Stories:

Create a fun story using shapes! For example, "Once upon a time, there was a big round circle who wanted to find a square friend." Encourage the student to add to the story!

Talking Points

  • "Look at this shape! What do you think it is? Can you find something like it?"
  • "Great job coloring! What happens if we mix two shapes together?"
  • "Let’s count how many triangles we found! One, two, three...!"
  • "Can you tell me a story about your favorite shape? What adventures do they go on?"
