Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand the concept of patterns using colors and shapes. They will be able to create their own patterns and explain them using simple language.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper (red, blue, yellow, green)
  • Shapes cut from the colorful paper (circles, squares, triangles)
  • Markers or crayons (optional)
  • Space to spread out and create patterns

Before the lesson, make sure to cut out various shapes from the colorful paper. Prepare a comfortable area where the student can sit and work on their patterns without distractions.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the colors of the paper you have. Once they find an object, discuss how it relates to the colors in their patterns.

  • Shape Sorting: Have the student sort the shapes into groups based on color or type. This helps them understand how to categorize items, which is an important part of recognizing patterns.

  • Create a Pattern: Using the shapes, ask the student to create their own pattern. For example, they could arrange a red circle, a blue square, and a yellow triangle in a repeating sequence. Encourage them to explain their pattern to you.

  • Pattern Storytime: After creating patterns, sit down together and read a short story that includes patterns, like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" Discuss the patterns in the story.

Talking Points

  • "Look at these colors! Can you find something in the room that is red?"
  • "Great job sorting! How did you decide to group these shapes?"
  • "Can you tell me what your pattern is? What comes next?"
  • "Do you see any patterns in this story? What do you think will happen next based on the pattern?"
