Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of shapes and be able to identify and name basic shapes like circles, squares, and triangles through fun activities and games.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful paper or cardboard (if available)
- Pencil or crayon (for drawing)
- Space to move around for activities
- Optional: a camera or smartphone to take pictures of the shapes created
Before the lesson, prepare some examples of shapes by cutting them out of paper or drawing them. Familiarize yourself with the names of the shapes to help guide the student.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Look for everyday objects that match the shapes you are learning. For example, find a round clock (circle) or a square window.
-
Shape Drawing:
Using a pencil or crayon, the student can draw their favorite shapes on paper. Encourage them to color the shapes in bright colors and talk about what they drew.
-
Shape Dance:
Create a fun dance where each move represents a shape! For example, spin around for a circle, jump for a square, and wiggle for a triangle. This helps connect movement with learning.
-
Shape Collage:
If you have colorful paper, help the student cut out shapes and glue them together to make a fun collage. Talk about each shape as you create!
Talking Points
- "Look, this is a circle! Can you find something that is round?"
- "This shape is a square. It has four equal sides. Can you count them with me?"
- "Triangles have three sides. Can you make a triangle with your hands?"
- "Great job finding shapes! Shapes are all around us. What shapes do you see outside?"
