Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of how computers talk to each other using fun activities that introduce the concepts of names and addresses in a playful way!

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Stickers (optional)
  • A computer or tablet (for demonstration purposes)

Before the lesson, make sure to have a quiet space to work and have the materials ready for the activities. It's also helpful to have a basic understanding of how to use a computer or tablet to show the student some examples.

Activities

  • Name Game: Have the student create a special name tag for their favorite toy. Explain that just like their toy has a name, websites have names too! Use colorful paper and markers to make it fun.

  • Treasure Hunt: Set up a simple treasure hunt in the house where each clue leads to the next. Explain that just like finding the treasure, computers find each other using names and addresses!

  • Sticker Connection: Use stickers to represent different computers. Have the student connect them with strings to show how they talk to each other. Explain that they need to know each other's names to connect!

Talking Points

  • "Just like you have a name, every website has a name!"
  • "When you want to find something, you ask for its name, just like in our treasure hunt!"
  • "Computers talk to each other using special names and addresses, like we use our home address!"
  • "Isn't it fun to think about how all the toys (or computers) can find each other with their names?"
