Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors and understand the concept of mixing colors to create new ones.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful paper or fabric scraps (red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
- A clear bowl of water
- Food coloring (if available)
- Paintbrush or fingers for painting
- A large sheet of white paper for mixing colors
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to know the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and how they mix to make secondary colors (green, orange, purple).
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of different colors and share their names.
-
Color Mixing Fun: Using the clear bowl of water, add a few drops of different food coloring. Let the student observe what happens when colors mix!
-
Creative Painting: Using the colorful paper or fabric scraps, let the student create a collage. Encourage them to talk about the colors they are using.
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is the same color?"
- "Look what happens when we mix these colors! Can you tell me what new color we made?"
- "Let’s use our hands to paint! What colors do you want to use today?"
- "Wow! You found so many colors! Which one is your favorite?"
