Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify basic shapes and their names, as well as recognize shapes in everyday objects around them.

Materials and Prep

  • No materials needed, just your imagination!
  • Be ready to explore shapes in your home and outside.
  • Prepare to ask questions and encourage the student to look for shapes in their environment.

Activities

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or outside. Look for objects that are circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Ask the student to point them out and say their names.

  • Shape Drawing: Encourage the student to draw their favorite shapes on a piece of paper. Talk about each shape as they draw it and ask them to color it in.

  • Shape Sorting: Create a simple sorting game by grouping objects found during the shape hunt into categories based on their shapes. Help the student sort them and talk about why they belong together.

  • Shape Songs: Sing songs or make up a fun rhyme about shapes. Use hand motions to represent each shape. This will help the student remember the shapes in a fun way!

Talking Points

  • "Look, there's a circle! Can you find something else that is a circle?"
  • "What shape is this? Yes, it's a square! Can you think of a square we see every day?"
  • "Let's count how many triangles we see! One, two, three... great job!"
  • "Shapes are everywhere! Can you find a shape in the sky or on the ground?"
