Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of shapes, be able to identify basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, and will have fun creating their own shape art!
Materials and Prep
No additional materials are needed for this lesson. Just make sure to have a clean space for activities and a willingness to explore shapes together!
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your home or yard. Look for items that match the shapes you are learning about. For example, find a round ball for a circle or a square box!
-
Shape Drawing: Draw different shapes on a piece of paper. Encourage the student to color them in and decorate them with stickers or doodles!
-
Shape Dance: Create a fun dance where you make the shapes with your body. For example, spread your arms and legs to make a star shape or curl up to make a circle!
-
Shape Storytime: Make up a story that includes different shapes as characters. For example, a brave triangle goes on an adventure to find a lost circle!
Talking Points
- "Look at this shape! What do you think it is? Can you find something like it around us?"
- "This is a circle! Circles are round and have no corners. Can you make a circle with your arms?"
- "Let’s count the sides of this shape. How many sides does a square have? Can you show me with your fingers?"
- "Shapes can be fun! What do you think shapes like to do when we’re not looking?"
