Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize basic shapes, identify them in their environment, and understand how to describe their properties, such as the number of sides and corners.
Materials and Prep
- None required for this lesson.
Before starting the lesson, it might be helpful to point out shapes in your home or outside. This will help the student connect the lesson to the real world.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find items that match specific shapes, like a circle (a ball) or a square (a box).
-
Shape Drawing: Encourage the student to draw different shapes on paper. They can use their fingers or any writing tool available to them. Talk about each shape as they draw.
-
Shape Sorting: Create a sorting game where the student can categorize objects around them into groups based on their shapes. For example, all circles in one group and all squares in another.
-
Shape Storytime: Make up a short story that includes different shapes as characters. For example, "Once upon a time, there was a happy triangle who loved to play with his circle friends!"
Talking Points
- "What shape is this? Can you find something like it around us?"
- "This is a circle! It has no corners and is round. Can you make a circle with your arms?"
- "Look at this square! It has four sides and four corners. Can you count them with me?"
- "Shapes are all around us! What shapes do you see outside?"
