Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors and understand how colors can mix to create new ones. The student will also engage in creative activities that reinforce their understanding of colors.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper or fabric scraps (red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
  • Markers or crayons
  • Water (for mixing colors if using paints)
  • Small containers (for mixing colors)
  • Optional: A simple color wheel (drawn on paper)

Before the lesson, it might be helpful to review the names of basic colors and prepare a space where the student can freely create and explore with the materials.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find items of different colors. For example, "Can you find something red?" This will help them recognize colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing Fun:

Using the small containers, let the student mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) with water to see what new colors they can create. Say, "What happens when we mix yellow and blue?" This encourages experimentation!

  • Colorful Art:

Using markers or crayons, have the student create a colorful drawing. Encourage them to use as many colors as they can. You can ask, "What colors did you use? Can you tell me about your picture?"

Talking Points

  • "What is your favorite color? Can you find something that color?"
  • "Did you know that when we mix red and yellow, we get orange? Let's try it!"
  • "Look at all the colors you used in your drawing! What do you like most about it?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! Can you name some colors you see right now?"
