Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, as well as identify objects in their environment that match those colors.
Materials and Prep
No additional materials are needed for this lesson. Just ensure that the learning environment is colorful and filled with various objects of different colors. You might want to prepare a few simple color names to refer to during the activities.
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects of specific colors. For example, say "Can you find something red?" and help them collect items as they identify them.
-
Color Sorting: Gather a variety of small items (toys, blocks, etc.) and ask the student to sort them by color. You can say, "Let's put all the blue things in one pile and all the yellow things in another!"
-
Color Mixing Fun: Use imaginary play to mix colors. For instance, say "If we mix red and yellow, what do we get?" Encourage them to think about the colors and come up with fun names for new colors.
-
Color Dance Party: Play music and dance while calling out different colors. Ask the student to dance like something that is that color (e.g., "Dance like a green frog!").
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Let's say it together!"
- "Can you find something in the room that is blue? Let's look!"
- "When we mix red and yellow, what do we get? Can you guess?"
- "Let's dance like a rainbow! What color should we be first?"
