Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different shapes, understand their properties, and identify shapes in their environment through fun activities and discussions.
Materials and Prep
No materials are needed for this lesson. Just make sure the learning space is clear and comfortable for activities. It's helpful to know the names of basic shapes like circle, square, triangle, and rectangle before starting the lesson.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the shapes being discussed. For example, “Can you find something round like a circle?”
-
Shape Drawing: Encourage the student to draw different shapes using their finger in the air or on a surface. You can say, “Let’s make a big circle in the air together!”
-
Shape Stories: Create a fun story using shapes as characters. For example, “Once upon a time, there was a happy square who wanted to find a round friend. What do you think happened?”
-
Shape Dance: Play a game where you call out a shape and the student has to dance like that shape. For instance, “Jump like a triangle!”
Talking Points
- “Look at this shape! This is a circle. Can you find something that is a circle?”
- “A square has four corners. Can you count the corners with me? One, two, three, four!”
- “What shape do you see in the sky? Is it a circle like the sun?”
- “Triangles are pointy! Can you make a triangle with your hands?”
