Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, as well as identify objects around them that match those colors. They will have fun exploring colors through hands-on activities and creative play!

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful paper or fabric scraps (red, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
  • Crayons or markers in various colors
  • Everyday objects around the house (toys, fruits, etc.)
  • Access to a window or outdoor space for a color scavenger hunt

Before the lesson, gather all colorful materials and objects. Familiarize yourself with the colors you will be teaching to help guide the student effectively.

Activities

  • Color Sorting:

Use the colorful paper or fabric scraps to sort them into piles based on their color. Ask the student to name each color as they sort.

  • Color Drawing:

Provide crayons or markers and encourage the student to draw a picture using at least three different colors. Ask them to explain their drawing and the colors they used.

  • Color Scavenger Hunt:

Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or outside to find objects that match the colors you’ve discussed. Encourage the student to point out and name each object they find.

  • Color Songs:

Sing simple songs about colors together, such as "Red and Yellow, Green and Blue." This will help reinforce their learning in a fun and musical way!

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
  • "Look around! Can you find something that is the same color as this?"
  • "Let’s mix colors! What happens when we mix red and yellow?"
  • "Can you draw something that is your favorite color? What is it?"
