Objective

Today, we will explore the wonderful world of colors! By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and name different colors, mix primary colors to create new ones, and understand how colors can express feelings and ideas.

Materials and Prep

  • White paper
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Watercolor paints (if available)
  • Small containers for mixing colors (like cups or bowls)
  • Water
  • Paintbrush (if using watercolor paints)

Before the lesson, make sure to set up a clean workspace where your student can freely express their creativity without worrying about making a mess.

Activities

  • Color Scavenger Hunt:

Go on a scavenger hunt around your home or yard to find objects of different colors. Have the student collect items and group them by color. This helps them learn to recognize colors in their environment!

  • Mixing Colors:

Using the watercolor paints, show your student how to mix primary colors (red, blue, yellow) to create secondary colors (green, orange, purple). Let them experiment and see what new colors they can create!

  • Feelings and Colors:

Discuss how different colors can make us feel. For example, red can be exciting, while blue can be calming. Ask your student how they feel about different colors and why.

  • Colorful Art Creation:

Have your student create a colorful masterpiece using crayons or colored pencils. Encourage them to use a variety of colors and think about the feelings they want to express in their artwork.

Talking Points

  • "What is your favorite color? Why do you like it?"
  • "Can you name some things that are red? How about blue?"
  • "When we mix yellow and blue, what color do we get? Let's try it!"
  • "How does the color green make you feel? Is it happy or calm?"
