Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create their own colorful artwork using primary colors.
Materials and Prep
- White paper
- Red, blue, and yellow paint (or crayons/markers)
- Paintbrushes (if using paint)
- Water container (if using paint)
- Paper towels or rags for cleaning up
- Apron or old shirt to protect clothing
Before the lesson, make sure to set up a clean workspace where the student can freely create without worrying about making a mess.
Activities
- Color Exploration:
Start by showing the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Ask the student to name each color and point to objects around them that match those colors.
- Color Mixing Experiment:
Using the primary colors, let the student mix them to create secondary colors. For example, mix red and yellow to make orange. Encourage them to predict what colors will be made before mixing.
- Creative Artwork:
Give the student a piece of white paper and let them create a colorful masterpiece using the colors they've learned about. Encourage them to use their imagination and mix colors as they go!
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is this color?"
- "When we mix red and yellow, what color do you think we will get? Let's find out!"
- "Look at how beautiful your painting is! What colors did you use? Can you tell me about your favorite part?"
- "Colors are everywhere! What colors do you see outside? Can you name them?"
