Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand basic counting and number recognition through engaging activities that make learning fun and interactive.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or markers
  • Small objects for counting (like buttons, blocks, or toys)
  • Printable number cards (1-10) - can be drawn on paper
  • A timer (optional, can use a phone or clock)

Activities

  • Counting Treasure Hunt:

Hide small objects around the room and ask the student to find a specific number of them. For example, "Can you find 5 buttons?" This activity will help with counting and number recognition.

  • Colorful Number Art:

Have the student draw numbers on paper and decorate them with crayons or markers. Encourage them to say the numbers out loud as they create their art. This will reinforce their understanding of numbers through creativity.

  • Number Match Game:

Using the printable number cards, mix them up and have the student match them with the corresponding number of objects. For instance, if they pick the card with the number 3, they should find 3 small objects to match it.

  • Counting Songs:

Sing counting songs together, such as "Five Little Ducks" or "Ten in the Bed." This will make counting fun and memorable through music and rhythm.

Talking Points

  • "Can you count how many buttons you found? Let's count together!"
  • "Look at this number! What number is this? Can you draw it for me?"
  • "Great job matching the number! How many objects do you have for the number 4?"
  • "Let's sing a counting song! Singing helps us remember numbers better!"
