Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe different shapes, recognize them in their environment, and create their own shape art using their imagination.
Materials and Prep
- No specific materials are needed for this lesson.
- Prepare to discuss shapes that can be found in everyday objects around the house.
- Think of fun ways to create shapes using the student's body or by drawing in the air.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a "shape hunt" around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match different shapes, like circles (a ball), squares (a box), and triangles (a slice of pizza). This helps them connect shapes with real-world items!
-
Shape Dance: Have a fun dance party where you can move like different shapes! For example, stretch out your arms to make a star shape, curl up into a ball for a circle, or stand tall and straight for a rectangle. This makes learning shapes active and enjoyable!
-
Shape Art: Use imaginary drawing to create shapes in the air with your finger. Then, ask the student to "draw" their favorite shape on an imaginary canvas. You can also encourage them to describe what they would create if they had colors to use!
Talking Points
- "Look around! Can you find something that is a circle? What about a square?"
- "Let's pretend to be shapes! Can you be a triangle and point your arms up?"
- "What shape do you like the most? Can you tell me why?"
- "Shapes are everywhere! Can you see any shapes in the room right now?"
