Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of patterns and how to identify them in everyday life through fun activities and games.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed for this lesson.
  • Be prepared to engage in activities that involve colors, shapes, and counting.
  • Have a space ready for movement and play.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a color scavenger hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects of specific colors and group them together.

  • Shape Sorting: Use toys or household items to sort shapes. Ask the student to identify and group items by shape, discussing each shape's name.

  • Counting Songs: Sing counting songs together, like "Five Little Ducks" or "Ten in the Bed," to help reinforce counting skills in a fun way.

  • Pattern Dance: Create a dance routine that includes movements in a pattern (e.g., jump, clap, spin). The student can follow along and create their own patterns.

Talking Points

  • "Can you find something red? Let's see how many red things we can find!"
  • "What shape is this? Can you find another one just like it?"
  • "Let's count how many ducks we have! One, two, three... how many more do we need?"
  • "Can you show me a pattern with your body? Jump, clap, jump! What comes next?"
