Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, understand the concept of mixing colors, and create their own colorful artwork!
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any color)
- Water (for washing hands and brushes)
- Small cups or containers (for mixing colors)
- Paint (red, blue, yellow)
- Brushes (or fingers for finger painting)
- Apron or old shirt (to protect clothes)
Before the lesson, prepare a workspace that is easy to clean. Set up the paints and brushes, and make sure the student has an apron or old shirt to wear.
Activities
-
Color Exploration: Start by showing the student the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Let them name each color and talk about things that are those colors, like a red apple or a blue sky.
-
Mixing Colors: Using the small cups, let the student mix two primary colors to see what new color they create. For example, mix red and yellow to make orange! Encourage them to guess what color will come next.
-
Art Creation: Give the student a piece of paper and let them paint with the colors they mixed. Encourage them to use their fingers or brushes and be creative! Ask them to tell you about their artwork as they create.
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you find something in the room that is this color?"
- "When we mix red and yellow, what color do you think we will get? Let's find out!"
- "Wow, look at your painting! Can you tell me what colors you used?"
- "Colors can make us feel happy! What color makes you feel happy?"
