Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different shapes, understand the concept of shapes in their environment, and create their own shape art using imagination.
Materials and Prep
- Paper (any color)
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (if the student is supervised and safe to use them)
- Glue (optional)
- Space to create and play
Before the lesson, ensure the student is in a comfortable space to explore and create. It's helpful to have a few shapes (like circles, squares, and triangles) drawn on paper as examples.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard. Ask the student to find objects that match the shapes you have drawn. For example, "Can you find something that looks like a circle?"
-
Shape Art:
Using the paper and crayons, encourage the student to draw their favorite shapes. They can color them and even create a picture using those shapes, like a house with a square base and a triangle roof.
-
Shape Storytime:
Read a fun story that includes shapes. After reading, ask the student to point out the shapes they remember from the story. This helps connect shapes to stories and imagination.
Talking Points
- "What shape is this? It’s a circle! Can you find something in the room that is a circle?"
- "Look at this triangle! It has three sides. Can you count them with me?"
- "Great job finding shapes! Shapes are everywhere! What shape do you see outside?"
- "Let’s make art with shapes! What shape do you want to draw first?"
