Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of shapes, be able to identify basic shapes, and recognize them in their surroundings.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors (for adult use only)
- Glue (for adult use only)
- Shapes cutouts (optional, can be drawn on paper)
Before the lesson, prepare some basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. You can draw them on paper or cut them out if you prefer!
Activities
-
Shape Hunt:
Go on a shape hunt around the house or yard! Look for objects that match the shapes you have learned about. For example, a round ball for a circle, or a book for a rectangle.
-
Shape Drawing:
Using the paper and crayons, ask the student to draw their favorite shapes. Encourage them to color them in and even create a picture using those shapes!
-
Shape Collage:
Help the student cut out different shapes from colored paper. Then, they can glue these shapes onto a larger piece of paper to make a fun shape collage!
-
Shape Songs:
Sing fun songs about shapes! You can make up a simple tune and sing about circles, squares, and triangles to make learning even more enjoyable!
Talking Points
- "Look at this shape! What do you think it is? Yes, it's a circle! Can you find something like this in our house?"
- "This is a square! Can you make a square with your hands? Great job!"
- "Triangles have three sides. Can you count to three with me? One, two, three!"
- "Let's sing about shapes! How about we sing, 'Round like a circle, pointy like a triangle!'"
