Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and name different colors, and understand how colors mix to create new ones. They will have fun exploring colors through hands-on activities!

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful crayons or markers
  • Plain white paper
  • Water and food coloring (if available)
  • A clear container for mixing colors
  • Paintbrush (optional)

Before the lesson, make sure to set up a comfortable and clean space for the activities. Gather all materials in one place to make it easy to access during the lesson.

Activities

  • Color Hunt:

Go on a color hunt around the house or outside. Ask the student to find something that is red, blue, yellow, etc. This will help them recognize colors in their environment.

  • Color Mixing:

Using water and food coloring, demonstrate how to mix colors. Show how blue and yellow make green! Let the student try mixing colors in their own container.

  • Colorful Art:

Give the student crayons or markers and plain paper. Encourage them to draw a picture using as many colors as they can. Ask them to name the colors they are using.

Talking Points

  • "Look around! Can you find something that is red? How about something blue?"
  • "When we mix blue and yellow, we get green! Let's see what happens when we mix these colors together!"
  • "Wow! You used so many colors in your picture! Can you tell me the names of the colors you used?"
  • "Colors are everywhere! What colors do you see outside? Let's go look!"
