Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand the concept of the number 1, including identifying it in different contexts and using it in simple counting activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Nothing! We will use our imagination and our surroundings.
  • Be prepared to point out things around the house or outside that represent the number 1.
  • Think of fun ways to count and play with the number 1 during the lesson.

Activities

  • Counting Game: Go around the house and find one of different items, such as one toy, one book, or one piece of fruit. Ask the student to count them and say, "I found one!"

  • One Minute Dance Party: Set a timer for one minute and have a dance party! Explain that we are dancing for "one" whole minute. When the timer goes off, everyone stops dancing.

  • Drawing Time: Ask the student to draw one big circle. Talk about how this is one circle, and how we can color it in or decorate it.

  • Story Time: Read a short story that features the number 1. After reading, ask the student to find one character or one item in the pictures.

Talking Points

  • "Look around! Can you find one thing that is your favorite?"
  • "When we dance for one minute, we are having fun for just one whole minute!"
  • "This is one circle. Can you color it in? What color do you want to use?"
  • "In our story, there was one big, happy dog. Can you find the dog in the pictures?"
