Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and name different colors in their environment, as well as understand the concept of mixing colors to create new ones.
Materials and Prep
- Colorful objects found around the house (toys, clothes, books, etc.)
- Paper and crayons or markers
- A clear container of water (optional for mixing colors)
- A towel or cloth for any spills (if using water)
Before starting the lesson, gather various colorful objects from around the house and ensure that the area is safe for activities, especially if water will be used.
Activities
-
Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house! Ask the student to find objects of a specific color. For example, say, "Can you find something red?" This will help them identify colors in their surroundings.
-
Color Mixing Fun: Use the crayons or markers to mix colors on paper. Encourage the student to color with two different colors together and see what new color they can create. You can say, "What happens when we mix blue and yellow?"
-
Water Color Mixing: If using water, add a few drops of food coloring (if available) to the water and let the student mix them. Ask them to observe how the colors change. You might say, "Look! What color do we get when we mix these two?"
Talking Points
- "What color is this? Can you say it out loud?"
- "Let’s find something in our house that is this color!"
- "When we mix these two colors, what do you think will happen?"
- "Wow! Look at the new color we made! Can you name it?"
