Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and identify different shapes, understand their names, and describe them using simple words.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Playdough (if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to explain what shapes are and how they can be found all around us. You might want to think of some examples of shapes in the home or outside.
Activities
-
Shape Hunt: Go on a mini scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects that match the shapes you will discuss. For example, find a round ball for a circle or a square box.
-
Shape Drawing: Draw different shapes on the paper and let the student color them. Encourage them to use different colors for each shape.
-
Playdough Shapes: If you have playdough, create different shapes together. Roll it out and form circles, squares, and triangles. Talk about each shape as you make it!
Talking Points
- "Look at this shape! This is a circle. Can you find something round like this?"
- "This is a square! It has four equal sides. Can you count them with me?"
- "A triangle has three sides. Can you make a triangle with your fingers?"
- "Shapes are everywhere! Can you find a shape in this room?"
