Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of colors, be able to identify and name basic colors, and explore how colors can mix to create new ones.

Materials and Prep

For this lesson, you will need:

  • Colorful objects (toys, clothes, or paper)
  • Water (if safe and appropriate)
  • Clear containers (like cups or bowls)
  • Food coloring (if available and safe)

Before the lesson, gather colorful objects from around the house and prepare a safe area for water activities if you choose to include them.

Activities

  • Color Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects of different colors. Encourage the student to name each color they find!

  • Color Mixing Fun: Use clear containers with water and food coloring (if available). Show how mixing different colors can create new colors. For example, mix red and blue to make purple!

  • Color Art: Use crayons or markers to draw pictures using only specific colors. Ask the student to create a rainbow or a colorful scene!

Talking Points

  • "What color is this? Can you find something else that is the same color?"
  • "Look what happens when we mix these colors! Can you guess what color we will get?"
  • "Let's count how many different colors we can find! One, two, three..."
  • "Can you tell me your favorite color? Why do you like it?"
